The original building housing the Crested Butte Club Boutique Inn & Spa was built in 1886. It was originally located on Elk Avenue which is now the main street in Crested Butte. In 1902 the building was sold by the Knights of the Paythian - a fraternal organization of English and Scottish miners - to a group of Croatian miners. They jacked the building up and rolled it on logs a block and a half up Second Street to its present location. In those days Second Street was the main street in Crested Butte and was lined with bars and brothels. It was known as St. Mary’s Hall or the Croatian Federal Union, Croatian Hall of the Sub Assembly NO. 26.
In the early 1900’s it was the most popular hall in town. It was a bar and brothel, in addition to a social meeting hall. Wedding celebrations were known to last an entire week. When the coal mines closed down in the 1950’s the hall went vacant until it was occupied for a time by the National Science Academy. The granddaughter of the school's Founder and Dean still comes around for a drink now and then. Around 1977 an addition was put on the south side of the building - racquetball courts, and it became know as the Crested Butte Athletic Club. Then around 1988 it was converted into a hotel, bar, and fitness center. The original hand carved (circa 1886) bar was saved and refinished and incorporated into the remodel. In 2004 it was converted into a Boutique Inn & Spa, but it still retains the original bar, a full fitness center with brand new locker rooms, steam rooms, indoor lap pool, and hot tub. A brand new full service spa provides all manner of massage therapy, manicures, pedicures, and facials, and includes a waiting lounge with a tea bar and water fall feature. The Crested Butte Spa is now the place to be seen in Crested Butte.
The Hotel is surrounded by the magical Victorian village of Crested Butte, which itself has been declared a National Historic District. The village is surrounded by a million acres of mountains and woods which have been designated National Forest and Wilderness Areas.
